Our ecosystems
Sustainable Energy
1. What are we talking about?
The Sustainable Energy ecosystem brings together innovation players in the fields of Energy Communities (energy pooling and symbiosis), industrial transition (low-carbon and electrification), renewable energies (hydrogen, wind power and offshore wind power), mobility and energy storage (batteries), and so on.
2. The cluster supports innovation in sustainable energy
This ecosystem accounts for 33% of the MecaTech Cluster's projects over the period 2007-2023.
Since 2023, the Sustainable Energy ecosystem has been part of the Walloon Government's Strategic Innovation Area (SIA): energy systems and sustainable housing.
Among the services offered by the MecaTech cluster, you can benefit from our support in setting up European projects in the field of batteries, thus promoting your development in sustainable energy.
3. A project that speaks to you.
The HECO2 portfolio of innovative projects was created in response to the call for projects in the 2022 Recovery and Resilience Plan. It brings together major industrial players keen to decarbonise their production facilities and reduce the impact of their activities on the environment. One project aims to electrify the huge furnaces used in the iron and steel industry to remelt scrap metal, which currently run on gas (link to success story)".

Circular Economy
1. What are we talking about?
The Circular Economy ecosystem brings together the players and innovation activities that are working to reduce our environmental impact and better manage our resources. The MecaTech Cluster is part of the Circular Wallonia programme, the Walloon government's circular strategy. For the MecaTech Cluster, the aim is to support the Metallurgy, Batteries and Transport value chains in order to reduce their demand for raw materials and secure Walloon jobs linked to the circular economy by 2030. Our mission? To reconcile Walloon industry and the environment through innovation, eco-design, advanced and circular materials, recycling..."
2. The cluster supports innovation in the circular economy
This ecosystem accounts for 8% of the MecaTech Cluster's projects over the period 2007-2023.
Since 2023, the Circular Economy ecosystem has been part of the Walloon Government's Strategic Innovation Area (SIA): circular materials.
Among all the services offered by the MecaTech cluster, you can take advantage of our CIRCO eco-design training.
3. A project that speaks to you
The Phoenix project deployed by project leader COMET TRAITEMENT has made it possible to achieve 98% recycled materials for motor vehicles

Industrie 5.0
1. What are we talking about?
After Industry 4.0, which saw the emergence of robotics, data, the Internet of Things (IoT), cybersecurity and artificial intelligence (AI), now comes the era of Industry 5.0, which puts people and environmental issues at the centre of the digital transition of manufacturing companies.
2. The cluster supports Industry 5.0 innovation
This sector accounts for 18% of the MecaTech cluster's projects over the period 2007-2023.
Since 2023, the Industry 5.0 ecosystem has been part of the Walloon Government's Strategic Innovation Area (SIA): Agile and safe production methods.
The cluster's services in the field of Industry 5.0: Made Different (as part of Digital Wallonia/Industrie du Futur), Cap Impact (link to service), POC (Proof of Concept around 4.0 technologies), Operational Excellence 4.0 Certification (in partnership with TechnoCampus and TechniFutur). Support in setting up projects.

MedTech
1. What are we talking about?
The MedTech (or Medical Devices & Digital Health) ecosystem aims to develop and interconnect innovation players in the field of medical devices (connected or not), digital health (technological) and in vitro diagnosis.
2. The cluster supports innovation in MedTech
This ecosystem accounts for 14% of the MecaTech Cluster's projects over the period 2007-2023, i.e. xx accredited projects.
Since 2023, the MedTech ecosystem has been part of the Walloon Government's Strategic Innovation Area (SIA): enhanced health.
Among the MecaTech cluster's services in the MedTech field, you can take advantage of our support in setting up projects and developing the production capacities of the entire Walloon subcontracting chain.
3. A project that speaks to you?
The WINGTR project, led by IBA, aimed to develop a less expensive solution to make proton therapy technology accessible to as many cancer patients as possible. The project led to the development of IBA's flagship product, Proteus® One. (link to success story)

Defence & Security
1. What are we talking about?
The defence and security sectors constitute both an ecosystem and a strong industrial activity in Wallonia. The MecaTech Cluster supports this ecosystem in its efforts to innovate in all areas of land-based defence and cybersecurity in particular. This ecosystem represents a turnover of more than one billion euros, and mobilises nearly 7,000 jobs.
2. The cluster supports innovation in defence and security
This ecosystem accounts for 13% of the MecaTech Cluster's projects over the period 2007-2023, i.e. 17 labelled projects.
The cluster's services: in collaboration with the SkyWin cluster, the Cap Impact programme, which helps accelerate the digital transition of companies, has been adapted to meet the specific needs of the aerospace sector, particularly in terms of cyber security. Support in setting up projects.
3. A project that speaks to you
The IRIS project, led by John Cockerill. Surveillance, whether in a military or civilian context, is today one of the essential elements guaranteeing the security and integrity of individual assets, equipment and people. The IRIS (Intelligent Recognition Information System) project brings together the scientific and technological skills of several partners to develop intelligent modules to help detect, recognise and analyse behaviours and threats.
